Alternativley, you could use some of grandmas old remedies, such as an application of surgical spirits or nail varnish remover. The solution evaporating, will dry out the affected skin as well.

Cooling down the affected area of cold sores, would probably also help reduce the throbbing. Applying and sliding an ice cube over the area will desensitize the skin and the cold will help with the healing at the same time.

Applying a soothing cream containing tea tree oil and camomile will always provide some relief. Applying some probiotic yogurt and massaging it into the skin has been known to releave the burning and scratchy sensations as well. A menthol toothpatse containing pepermint or menthol, also seems to soothe away some discomfort.

So these methods used on their own, or in conjunction with each othe, will be cold sore relief made simple.
